Math Olympiad (Taught by Mrs. Haigh and Mr. Walder)
Extra Math? Who could possibly think that was a fun idea? Well, evidently a lot of kids do! Last year nearly 150,000 students from 6,000 teams participated in the Olympiads. All 50 states and 30 countries were represented. Bannockburn’s team will meet before school on Tuesdays. The kids will explore a topic or strategy in depth, using Creative Problem Solving in School Mathematics (or other sources), or they practice for the contests, using non-routine problems provided by the Math Olympiad organization.
The highlights for students are the five monthly contests, given from November to March. No traveling is required. These contests provide an incentive for students to intensify their study of math. Kids end up sharpening their math skills while having so much fun they forget that extra math didn’t originally sound like fun!
The club is open to students in the 3rd through 5th grades. Please note that this is a continuation of a year long club which began in the fall. There is space for 7 more students to join.
Dates: Tuesday mornings from 8:20-9:10 am (see which specific Tuesday mornings below)

Robots - Beginning (Taught by Adventures with Robots staff)
This is the core class, where beginners learn to build and program LEGO robots using LEGO Education's award-winning WeDo robotics and programming software. Students follow step-by-step on-screen instructions to build their robots (see the hungry alligator at left!), and then build a suggested program to get their robots working. After that, those who are ready build more complicated programs involving motion or tilt sensors, or improvise to make their robots achieve certain tasks.
Towards the end of the session, we encourage some of the more advanced students in this class to skip the group activity and instead take our challenge to use what they've learned so far to design their own programmable car that that can move without being touched. Even our biggest robotics buffs find this extremely challenging, but we work with them to help them succeed.
One robotics kit and one netbook provided for each pair of students. Areas of exploration: robotics, programming.
The club is open to students in the 2nd and 3rd grades and will meet for 7 sessions on Friday afternoons.

Participants will engage in regional competitions in Maryland in Fall, 2012 (registration fee to be determined) for a chance to advance to a National/International First LEGO League competition to be held in April, 2013. In addition to building and programming robots of their own design using the LEGO Mindstorms platform, students will complete a research project of their choosing and will present their findings as well as discuss their team efforts during the competition. Enrollment is limited to ten because of competition rules. Because space is limited, this club may not be able to take all interested students.
